A petition to ban fireworks outside of official displays is gathering momentum, with tens of thousands of people signing already.
Last night, the number stood at 50,000 signatures. By this morning, another 5,000 had added their support to the government petition.
Their argument is that every year, thousands of people are ‘terrorised’ by unofficial fireworks displays, such as people letting them off in their back gardens or in the street.

‘Every year animals are hurt and traumatised by fireworks,’ Mike Old, who created the petition, wrote.‘Ban them please.’
He wants to stop people being able to buy rockets, sparklers or Catherine Wheels in the supermarket because they are too dangerous.

The petition will be debated in parliament if it reaches 100,000 signatures.

- People use them for weeks, not just on November 5
- They give off toxic chemicals, which produce the colours and glittering, bright effect but can harm people’s health and the environment.
- They are dangerous and can cause serious burns including blindness
- The loud noises, flashes and bangs are traumatic to pets, and to people as well who may have experienced conflict
- Bonfires also harm wildlife, such as hedgehogs who might be sheltering inside before it is lit
