Boy with half a heart gets benefits taken away on his eighth birthday

Boy with half a heart gets benefits taken away on his eighth birthday

It’s not the kind of birthday present you hope for.
Ben Gamble, who was born with only half a heart, got letter on his eighth birthday saying most of his government benefits would be taken away.
Not the greatest of timing.
The schoolboy will need a transplant if he is to reach adulthood, and has already undergone five operations and been brought back to life twice.

He was born without a left ventricle, meaning his heart only has one pump instead of two – making it difficult for blood to be sent around his body.
Ben, who refers to his chest scars as his ‘zip’, faces his next operation at Christmas.
