Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson face copyright lawsuit for Uptown Funk

Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson could face copyright lawsuit for Uptown Funk

Bruno Mars and producer Mark Ronson could face a lawsuit over their smash hit Uptown Funk, which reportedly stands accused of copying significant portions of Collage, a 1983 single from Young Girls.
The pair face copyright infringement for allegedly using significant parts of Collage’s rhythm, harmony, melody and structure, according to TMZ.
‘Many of the main instrumental attributes and themes of Uptown Funk are deliberately and clearly copied from Young Girls, including, but not limited to, the distinct funky specifically noted and timed consistent guitar riffs present throughout the compositions,’ reads the lawsuit, as obtained by Pitchfork.
While Larry White is the only member of Young Girls still alive, the estates of Grady Wilkins and Lee Peters are also named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
Both Mars and Ronson are said to have been inspired by the Minneapolis electro-funk soul scene of the eighties, which Young Girls were a part of.
In addition to Bruno and Mark, other defendants named in the lawsuit include Trinidad James, Jeff Bhasker, Devon Gallaspy, Phillip Lawrence, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner/Chappell Music, Atlantic Records, and RCA Records.
Released in 2014, Uptown Funk is the most successful song released by Mars, having won two Grammys and sold over 6.1 million copies.
The track also reportedly brings in over $100,000US (£82,021) of weekly revenue on streaming service Spotify.
It’s not the first time the song Uptown Funk has been at the centre of legal battles.
In 2015, the writing credits of the song were expanded after the writers behind Gap Band’s Oops Upside Your Head filed a complaint through YouTube’s right management system.
Earlier this year, another band, The Sequence, accused both Mars and Ronson of copying their 1979 song, Funk You Up, although they never filed a lawsuit.
