Woman faces jail for joining Facebook food group and selling her meals

A mother could be sent to prison for selling her homemade meals to people via a Facebook group.
Mariza Reulas joined the group 209 Food Spot, a food forum where people in Stockton, California shared recipes and occasionally sold their food.

Her signature dish, ceviche, a seafood dish popular in Latin America, proved particularly popular.
However, it could also lead to the single mother of six going to jail after officials in San Joaquin County claimed it is a crime.
Reulas told Fox 40: ‘It was just like unreal that they were saying you could face up to a year in jail.’
Last December, an undercover investigator contacted Reulas and arranged to buy a plate of ceviche.
Reulas is now facing a trial after she was charged with operating a food facility and engaging in business without a permit.

Selling food not subject to health department inspection puts customers in danger and undercuts business owners who do get permits, deputy district sttorney Kelly McDaniel said.
The Facebook group was sent a warning before charges were handed down.
Several people in the Facebook group were charged, but Reulas is the only member facing trial as she refused to plead guilty and accept three years of probation.
