The Europa League may be seen as an unwanted distraction by many at
Manchester United, and no more so than by manager Jose Mourinho, but
this week’s clash against Fenerbahce could present a good chance for the
United boss to experiment with his struggling attack.
Of course, as United’s recent 4-1 win over the Turkish giants amidst
mostly poor results against stronger opposition in the Premier League
shows, this game won’t necessarily offer the biggest test for whoever
leads the line for the Red Devils, but it’s surely time for something to
change after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s dire recent form.
The summer signing from Paris Saint-Germain started the season
well for United, scoring five goals in his first five games, but he’s
now on a run of just one strike in his last ten, and was hugely culpable
in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Burnley.
This should perhaps come as little surprise – Ibrahimovic is 35 years
old and has played 90 minutes in every Premier League game this season,
as well as making appearances for United in both the Europa League and
the League Cup; many younger players would struggle with so much game
time in an intense league, especially with the burden of being the only
truly reliable source of goals.
United surely didn’t expect to rely on Ibrahimovic to such an extent
at this stage in his career, so it’s time for Mourinho to start using
his squad and trusting younger players in that central striker spot.
Here’s a little look at how he can start for the trip to Fenerbahce this Thursday night:
